About Us
At Zaptronics.co.nz, we build tools for curious minds.
Zaptronics was founded on a simple idea: advanced scientific experiments shouldn’t be locked away inside universities and industrial laboratories. The most interesting discoveries often begin with curiosity, persistence, and someone willing to build something unusual on a workbench late at night.
We design and manufacture electronic modules, control systems, and experimental hardware for scientists, engineers, students, educators, makers, and home experimenters.
Some of our projects explore the edge of physics — cloud chambers, high-voltage systems, scintillation detectors, thermal control systems, precision sensing, and experimental instrumentation. Others are practical building blocks: PWM controllers, sensor interfaces, power systems, and embedded electronics that can be reused across dozens of different experiments.
The goal is not just to sell products.
The goal is to enable experimentation.
Built for Experimenters
Many scientific experiments require custom hardware that simply does not exist commercially — or if it does, it is priced far beyond the reach of hobbyists, schools, and independent researchers.
Zaptronics bridges that gap by creating modular, reusable systems that are:
- Accessible to home experimenters
- Useful in educational environments
- Flexible enough for real R&D work
- Open and understandable
- Designed by people who actually use them
We believe scientific equipment should invite exploration, not hide behind black boxes.
The Lab Notebook Philosophy
Zaptronics is built around an open development philosophy.
Our Lab Notebook documents the real engineering process:
- Design successes
- Failures and dead ends
- Measurements and testing
- Thermal experiments
- High-voltage challenges
- Manufacturing lessons
- Firmware development
- Mechanical iteration
- Unexpected discoveries
Instead of pretending engineering is a clean, linear process, we show the reality of experimental development.
Because that reality is where the interesting part happens.
Designed and Developed in New Zealand
Zaptronics is based in New Zealand and developed by engineers with backgrounds in embedded systems, electronics, control systems, and real-world industrial hardware.
Our products are designed with an emphasis on:
- Reliability
- Repairability
- Safety
- Precision
- Clear documentation
- Long-term reuse
Many of our systems begin as internal research tools before evolving into reusable modules for the broader experimental community.
More Than a Single Project
While cloud chambers are one of our flagship experimental platforms, the technologies developed around them extend far beyond a single experiment.
A control module designed for condensation management might later be used in:
- Sonoluminescence experiments
- Scintillation systems
- Optical instrumentation
- Environmental control systems
- High-voltage research
- Cryogenic or thermal projects
This modular approach allows experimenters to build increasingly advanced systems without starting from scratch every time.
Who We Build For
Zaptronics products are designed for:
- Curious individuals
- Schools and universities
- Museums and science outreach
- Makerspaces
- Independent researchers
- Electronics enthusiasts
- Weekend physicists
- Anyone who wants to understand how the world works by building something real
If you’ve ever looked at a scientific instrument and thought:
“I want to know how that works.”
You’re probably in the right place.
Our Mission
To make advanced experimental science more accessible, more understandable, and more buildable.
One module at a time.
